We counted together until 150 or so - those who did not attend, please try to do some German counting ("zählen") on your own!

Das Alphabet - buchstabieren (= to spell)

We also revised the German Alphabet. We furthermore used the "Buchstabiertafel on Seite 81 of our Kursbuch. With its help, we spelled our names to each other.

Formular

We filled a form at Seite 12 of the course book and interviewed our partners about their personal data with the help of the questions we learned (find an overview at Seite 13 - No. 5).

Exercises

As there will be no class on November, 1 (holiday = Feiertag), please use the time to have a thorough glance at Seiten 14 an 15 of the Kursbuch: There are the words, sentences and grammar you should have learned so far.

As a written exercise, please introduce your mother briefly, using the sentences we have studied. Example:

Bürokratie von A bis Z (buerocracy from A to Z)

We did the listening comprehension 1 on page (Seite) 12 of the Kursbuch and corrected the "Personalbogen" (= staff record card).

Welche Sprachen sprichst du? Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie?

Which languages do you know? - In German we ask: "Welche Sprachen sprichst du?" (lit: Which languages do you speak?)

Carlos Rodriguez spricht Spanisch, Deutsch und Englisch. Spanisch ist seine Muttersprache (= mother tongue).

Maciej spricht Polnisch. Das ist seine Muttersprache. Er spricht auch Englisch. Marisol hat zwei Muttersprachen. Sie spricht Englisch und Spanisch. Samantha spricht Spanisch. Das ist ihre Muttersprache. Samantha spricht auch Englisch. Adele spricht Russisch, Tartarisch und ein bisschen (= a little) Türkisch. Fiacha spricht Irisch, Englisch und ein wenig (= a little) Somali. Andrea spricht Deutsch als Muttersprache, Englisch, Französisch und ein bisschen Arabisch.
Alle Studentinnen lernen Deutsch. Sie sprechen schon ein bisschen Deutsch.

As we can see, most of the languages end in "-isch". Exceptions: "Deutsch" and some other languages like "Somali" (the language spoken in Somalia).

Das Alphabet

The letters (= Buchstaben) of the German alphabet are pronounced differently than the English ones. Please listen to 2 - Das Alphabet (Kursbuch, Seite 12) or use the following video to make yourself familiar with the spelling:

Guten Abend!

Today we listened to the dialogues 1-4 on CD2 to enlarge our portfolio of greetings with page 78 of the book. We heard and read the following greetings:

A = Österreich, D = Deutschland, CH = Schweiz
Servus (A), Grüß Gott (A), Auf Wiederschau'n (A), Servus (A), Baba (A), Tschau (A, CH), Guten Tag (D, A), Auf Wiedersehen (D, A), Hallo (D, A),  Tschüss (mainly: D, also: A), Grüezi (CH), Hoi (CH), Uf Wiederluege (CH)

On page 78 we also found a text about "Nationalitäten" (nationalities). The nationalities of the German speaking countries:

Österreich -> der Österreicher, die Österreicherin. -> Ich bin Österreicherin.
Deutschland -> der Deutsche, die Deutsche -> Bist du Deutscher? (Exception! This noun ends in -r when using it without the definite article!)
Schweiz -> der Schweizer, die Schweizerin

Die Nationalitäten in unserem Kurs

Fiacha kommt aus Irland. Er ist Ire. Samantha kommt aus Mexiko. Sie ist Mexikanerin. Ye kommt aus China. Sie ist Chinesin. Ona und Marisol kommen aus Amerika. Sie sind Amerikanerinnen. Adele kommt aus Russland. Sie ist Russin. Denisa kommt aus Albanien. Sie ist Albanerin. Alicia kommt aus Kanada. Sie ist Kanadierin. Maciej kommt aus Polen. Er ist Pole. Petar kommt aus Serbien. Er ist Serbe.

We continued with exercises 5 a + b on p. 78 + 79.

Die zweite Deutschstunde (18.10.)

Am Donnerstag haben wir begonnen, mit dem Kursbuch zu arbeiten.
On Thursday we started working with our course book.

We did listening comprehension (Hören) with page 8, dialogue "Praktikant in Deutschland". We also did the grammar exercise on page 8 ("Grammatik auf einen Blick: Verben").
We also listened to the dialogues on page 10 and did all the exercises, including "Grammatik auf einen Blick: Verben". Thus, we now have our first verb conjugations.

Furthermore, we found out the following rules (=Regeln):
1. In Ja/Nein-Fragen steht das Verb auf Position 1.
2. In Antworten (und W-Fragen) steht das Verb auf Position 2.
(N.B.: W-Fragen are the questions starting with a question-word with "w", like "Woher", "Wo", "Wie", ...)

Finally, we listened to the numbers 1-10 (cf. p. 11 of the book "Die Adresse von Anne").

Please do the following home exercises:
1. Write (simple) sample sentences with the verb "studieren" in all forms. (ich - du - er/sie - wir - ihr - sie).
2. Go again through the numbers 1-10 and prepare the rest of the numbers (till 100) with the follwoing website:
